Maybe you’ve experienced this at school or work before: Dealing with someone who thinks he’s much better at his job than he really is. This can not only be really annoying, but it can lead to disaster as a group project is made much more difficult by someone’s unchecked ego. A new TED-Ed video, based on a lessonby psychologist David Dunning, dives into why this happens and why people are so bad at judging their skills in general, looking into the phenomenon known asthe Dunning-Kruger effect. “Knowing how competent we are and how our skills stack up to other people’s is more than self-esteem boost,” narrator Addison Anderson explained. “It helps us figure out when we can forge ahead on our own decisions and instincts and when we need, instead, to seek out advice.“But,” Anderson added, “psychological research suggests that we’re not very good at evaluating ourselves accurately. In fact, we frequently overestimate our own abilities.” This is true “to a degree that violates the laws of math.” For example: “When software engineers at two companies were asked to rate their performance, 32 percent of the engineers at one company and 42 percent at the other put themselves in the top 5 percent.” So what’s going on here? There’s actually a reasonable explanation: “When psychologists Dunning and [Justin] Kruger first described the effect in 1999, they argued that people lacking knowledge and skill in particular areas suffer a double curse. First, they make mistakes and reach poor decisions. But second, those same knowledge gaps also prevent them from catching their errors. In other words, poor performers lack the very expertise needed to recognize how badly they’re doing.”
How can someone know he’s a bad writer if he doesn’t know even basic writing skills? The good news is once people know they are bad at something say, if they fail at a logic puzzle they’ll typically admit to it. But some level of experience or expertise is needed for a person to come to that realization. That may be why people with a moderate amount of experience or expertise often have less confidence in their abilities,” Addison said. They know enough to know there’s a lot they don’t know. But knowledge can lead to some people overestimating others: “Experts tend to be aware of just how knowledgeable they are. They often make a different mistake: They assume that everyone else is knowledgeable too.”
“The result is that people, whether they’re inept or highly skilled, are often caught in a bubble of inaccurate self-perception,” Addison explained. “When they’re unskilled, they can’t see their own faults. When they’re exceptionally competent, they don’t perceive how unusual their abilities are.” There’s a way to prevent all of this: “First, ask for feedback from other people and consider it, even if it’s hard to hear. Second, and more important, keep learning. The more knowledgeable we become, the less likely we are to have invisible holes in our competence. Keep in mind this is all just one explanation for why and how incompetent people may overestimate themselves. For examples of other explanations, check out a good rundown by psychologist Tal Yarkoni. Personality types affect ego so is pride, arrogance, ignorance, delusion of grandeur influence through pattern. In extreme cases some people may not receive genuine help by feeling under valued or picked on. Often good ideas are rejected as ‘negative’ or an ‘attack’ on themselves. Often training helps a humble person to listen to instructions and relevant advise. Three heads are better than one, so good to make room for critical thinking logical reasoning to accept compromise and other points of view. People will listen if spoken to in a soft manner and not embarrassed in front of others to feel humiliated. Each person must learn to consider the other points of view and be willing to change.
Accused constantly of entitlement, lack of spacial awareness, consideration for others so assumes life revolves around them. Many young people are balanced and level-headed and matured for their age. Able to accomplish great things in life above their age. Child geniuses for example, spend hours studying hard so they perform above chronological age. Despite great accomplishment of young people some tarnish their image by actions. Blamed and labelled as fragile millennial snowflake generation is this really a fair label given them?
Some do not understand how the real world works convince themselves they are always right. Easily offended and emotional feel like victims dealt with by wrong hand in life. If graduate job they applied for often is unavailable, feel dehumanized and demeaned to take jobs able to do, seen as beneath them. Overate abilities and ego but excellent at computers, iPhone, yet the irony is a victim of modern success. Technology robots are creating unemployment fast and continues to make many depressed and sad. One would think any job will do under such circumstances instead, their attitude is to look for perfect job with perfect environment to make them truly happy. Hence constantly changing jobs wearing hearts on their sleeves in need of support to even function daily. Their mistake to impress interviewers is erratic, thinking prospective employers being tested. They question how ethical a company is, its attitude to the climate change debate. Is the board diverse or did it suffer from white male culture? It did not occur to precocious young talent they should try to impress the company investigated. Do not feel very privileged but suffer from relative deprivation so their generation is asked to “check their privilege.” Although surrounded by the significant adults like parents, teachers or colleagues some prefer to seek advice online through social networks. This is reason to confirm they receive wisdom from peers of the millennial snowflake generation. Their fragility is established as a narrative stick used against them.

Ask for help or advise if not sure about presents or gifts to give each person as Jesus received gifts relating to his life, call and destiny. Gifts must be relevant and meaningful to the receiver not just what you insist on giving them whether they like or want it or not. Remember the golden rule of gifts to yourself and how it makes you feel. Be kind-hearted especially with the innocent children around do not to ruin the day for them. If physically present be a part of family or rather stay distant and send presents. instead of stressing all. Some might cite Christmas as a cause of breakdown of a family and their marriage. By fighting each year over Christmas among other issues toxic relationships can reach the tipping point at that time. Yet those who listen, change, adapt to enjoy Christmas but the stubborn ones continue ruining it for loved ones. Without an awareness over behaviour that the obsession with achieving that one, symbolic or perfect family causes misery not merriment. In the Bible, Jesus said in Luke 12:15, Take care and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in abundance of possessions.
One person described themselves as a tyrant in family festive season. Fretting over every last detail for weeks ahead in a bid to make it all extra special. And refusing to delegate anything even the decorating of the tree or laying the table since none else ever got things right in their opinion. As we grow up, young women are not necessarily taught to exhibit any self-confidence, and if we do, we are often criticized for being “snobby” or “stuck-up” or “bitchy” words seldom associated with men. We hear damaging terms like “women’s intuition” suggesting that we aren’t making strategic analyses, but basing our decisions on some ethereal gut feeling but study after study shows women and men equally data driven. And the relentless emphasis placed on how we look erodes our self-image and for most of us, gets worse over time. As a mother of 3 young girls, this resonates every time daughters receive another impossibly-proportioned doll designed for dress up, caregiving, or primping.
Some women in a perceived masculine job are treated with ridicule finding it hard to convince men they are as good and competent as required to do the job even with their identical qualifications trained by exact same Institute. These bias comes in underhand tactics, jokes derogatory of performance and hurtful comments that can affect confidence. It is sometimes deliberately done hoping it drives away unwanted females from an all male exclusive zone. These can be do traumatic for women that it is very necessary to educate men on how to act, behave or talk to women. Especially the women of diversity background raised in serious environments teach respect of the emotional feeling others. Healthy interactions are required in a civilised society that prides itself on equal rights or equal opportunities. Women are still facing hitting a glass ceiling if they also desire promotion by climbing a broken ladder. It is well-documented we way we raise girls and women has a lasting impact on way they view themselves and their abilities. Negative messages will engender self-doubt and lead us to underestimate ourselves. The result is not only a nearly universal feeling of imposter syndrome but fear of making mistakes, suspicion of underperforming unattainable quest for perfection. This is what is shutting down when making a decision to be more confident.
Practice, practice, practice
It doesn’t matter what level of self-assurance you start at, the more time and effort you dedicate to practicing being more confident, the faster your brain will change and the faster you’ll master it. So it is important to remove ourselves from situations and people who make you feel bad because confidence largely comes from being in supportive environment. Environment comprises people around us and what we choose to focus our attention on. It is beneficial to concentrate on things that are empowering and to steer clear of exposure to images and contents that make us feel bad about ourselves. The way we choose to hold and to conduct ourselves is another factor. The mental simulations help envisioning ourselves finishing a race, speaking in public to a standing ovation, mastering job, getting a degree can all help build ourselves up. Just as a coach gives encouraging pep talk to the team before taking the field, we can give ourselves a confidence lift. Notably, these practices have an impact on our overall health and wellbeing, serving as buffer to stress, depression, and fostering good mental and physical health. When we choose confidence, we are rewiring our brains and we are able to change ourselves and our world, for the better.
