CALLED BY WRONG NAMES?

wp-1577263364882.gifMany of us have been called the wrong name by a parent or those who confuse names of our closest friends or the most cringingly called our new beau by the name of an ex. It’s a common awkward moment between loved ones that it has become entertainment trope: Ross calls Emily the wrong name at the altar in a memorable episode of the classic sitcom Friends. In The Goonies, Brand called his brother Mikey’s name by their mother. The mistake happens in Harry Potter, with Sirius calling Harry by his father’s name, James. But while social etiquette dictates we correctly identity the people closest to us errors occur frequently than we would like. Most people recall at least one of a cringe-worthy moment when you wish you could rewind the clock. However, anecdotes are not data. As psychology researchers, we set out to answer a simple question: Why do we so often accidentally call the people we know by the wrong name?wp-1577263440685.jpgA phenomenon of inadvertently calling someone familiar by the wrong name is known as misnaming. The study paywall published in October journal Memory and Cognition asked over 1,700 people whether they had ever been misnamed or if they ever committed a misnaming. We asked what names were incorrectly used and the relationship between the people or animals involved. Our results confirmed these errors are common and committed by people of all ages. Moreover, misnaming does not appear to be indicator of aging or of cognitive decline with Alzheimer’s disease. The most common misnaming reported was a parent, usually the mother, using the wrong sibling’s name. Less common misnaming incidents included children being called family pet’s name by their parents. Why might this occur? Results suggest it is not due to people looking alike, nor is it driven by the similarity of names involved e.g. calling Mark, Mike. wp-1577263413651.jpgMisnaming typically occurs in a social group: When family members misname other family members, incorrect names they most often use are names of other people in the family. The same pattern is observed among friends often friends usually misname each other using the incorrect name of another friend. We store information about a person in a mental semantic network that contains information about other related people, places, and things. When remembering something units in a semantic network is activated when enough units relevant to concept are activated the information reaches a threshold, and we remember it. Through a process called “spreading activation,” other information related to a concept may be activated this may lead to errors if incorrect information reaches a threshold and is remembered, such as the name of a loved one. In this mind map, a mother likely associates her children with one another. When attempting to retrieve the name of her son, she is more likely to inadvertently select the name of her daughter than the name of a colleague due to the close connections between her children’s names in her semantic network. So your mom calls you by your sibling’s name because she loves both of you, and associates you with one another.wp-1577263429163.jpgMisnaming perhaps the most surprising finding of our survey is family members sometimes use their dog’s name, but not any other type of pet’s name misnaming family members. This was not because the participants who reported this type of misnaming happen to have owned more dogs: They owned approximately the same number of cats as dogs. One interpretation of this finding is that dogs are a central part of pet-owning families; the family dog is likely stored in the same semantic network as other family members, which suggests that we consider dogs a part of the family, but not cats. As pack animals, dogs may be more integrated into family units than other domesticated animals. Humans often form unique attachments to dogs, and they are also likely to orally communicate with them. This unique attachment, coupled with the fact that dogs are more responsive to their own names, may explain why humans are more likely to be inadvertently called the name of the family dog rather than the name of other family pets. So, the next time you call someone you love the wrong name, don’t fret: It’s just a sign that you are blessed enough to have multiple loved ones to keep track of.

Psychology suggests that when someone calls you the wrong name, it’s because they love you

GOSPEL OF GOD’S KINGDOM

1557498091100-9023010.jpgThe GOSPEL OF GOD’S KINGDOM is the MESSAGE to all nations. In Romans 1:16 the GOSPEL is “to Jew FIRST,” then ALL NATIONS. First Choice Jews is GOSPEL POWER of GOD for SALVATION to ALL who BELIEVE in the GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST. GOD used HIS POWER to Jews first and ALL the Nations in SALVATION PLAN of GOD. Charity begins at GOD’S Home among HIS Chosen people Israel. GOD’S GOSPEL KINGDOM is established through JESUS CHRIST KING OF Kings, LORD of Lords a Jew. GOD CHOSE Jesus as Abraham’s descendant in Genesis 12 BLESSED by COVENANT. Nehemiah 9:7 says, “GOD … Chose Abram from Ur of the Chaldeans in Iraq.” In Deuteronomy 14:2, GOD CHOSES people for HIS OWN personal possession out of all people on the face of earth.”Amos 3:2 says, “You ONLY GOD CHOSE among all families on earth.” Romans 11:28-29 says GOD’S CHOICE made them HIS Beloved for the sake of the Fathers, for Gifts and Calling of God are irrevocable.” Jews descend from tribe of Judah a son of Jacob. Tribe of Lion of Judah descendant Jesus, GOD CHOSE from the Royal genealogy of King David.1557501920584-1476493729.jpg GOD’S GOSPEL KINGDOM MESSAGE in Abraham is Isaac CHOSEN by GOD to do HIS WORK and establish HIS KINGDOM on earth. SALVATION BY GOD’S POWER to ALL Nations included in Abraham’s Covenant are grafted in by faith of Jew and Gentiles. God elects Chosen by HIS FREEWILL CHOICE: “The LORD didn’t set HIS LOVE to CHOOSE you because you were more in number than others for you were fewest of all peoples, but the LORD LOVES you and keeps an Oath SWORN to forefathers in Deuteronomy 7:7-8. GOD USED SOVEREIGN POWER and HIS AUTHORITY to Decide Jews join Gentiles in HIS GOSPEL KINGDOM OF GOD. In Romans 3:1, GOD’S Revelations promise to Israel by Moses or prophets to the nations. Romans 9:4 says to Israel belongs Covenants, giving of Laws and promises.” The GOSPEL OF SALVATION is given to Jews in the WORD of God, the Old Testament Scripture is basis of laws. The Messiah Jesus Christ a Jew gave His Life as ULTIMATE SACRIFICE for sins to Jew first and all nations. In Romans 9:5   says Christ is set over all blessed by God.1557501815494-9023010.jpgThe Messiah Jesus, the Son of David in Romans 1:3 started Ministry with Jews to lost sheep of Israel in Matthew 10:5-6. Jesus in John 4:22 told the Samaritan woman at well, “SALVATION is from the Jews.” CHOSEN nation is GOD’S GOSPEL Revelation through Messiah, SAVIOUR by salvation from Jews.” Romans 11:17-24, says Jews and Gentiles grafted into Covenant by in Christ Jesus True Vine so nations are His Tree’s branches. God in HIS MERCY saves all nations as children of Abraham by faith says Galatians 3:7. All by faith children of Abraham, God’s Covenants with Abraham extends to all the nations on earth. In Acts 13:46, Paul and Barnabas preaching in Antioch of Pisidia told Jews “Its necessary the word of God be spoken to you first for eternal life to turn Gentiles.” From Israel, is the spreading of the GOSPEL to new places, through Jewish Messiah is GOOD News of His Salvation. He who is given much from him required more accountability so in Romans 2:9-10, tribulation and the time of Jacob’s distress is to Jew first and so judgement begins in the Church of God grafted in. Glory, honour, peace rewards to all who does good to the Jews, blessed. For Messiah sake, everyone given much, much is required in Luke 12:48.1557501056282-9023010.jpg In Romans 1:16, “The GOSPEL is POWER of God unto Salvation to all who believe, to Jew first and all nations. So important to understand God set up HIS KINGDOM by HIS POWER and Authority. The Seed of the woman through Genesis 29:31-35, “PRAISE THE LORD” son of Jacob, Judah CHOSEN out of 12 sons of Jacob to birth the Messiah. GOD’S GOSPEL KINGDOM is through the Son of God Jesus. GOD’S Salvation is in Christ Jesus, “HIS WAY, THE TRUTH and LIFE so none comes to Father GOD except through Jesus Christ in John 14:6. Salvation is through ONE GOD ONE Mediator between God and all wo/men in Christ Jesus in 1 Timothy 2:5. Bible is clear salvation is found ONLY in Jesus Christ for Christian believer’s in God. Authority of GOD’S WORD is the Biblical Authority of sharing the Saving GOSPEL to all nations to follow GOD’S POWERFUL GOSPEL KINGDOM of Son JESUS CHRIST. God designed and wants salvation as the SOVEREIGN LORD GOD ALMIGHTY with final say in mankind’s eternal destiny. Freewill choice is given to all mankind to accept God’s offer of salvation to join HIS GOSPEL KINGDOM. All in Christ receive GOD’S FREE GIFT of SALVATION but those who reject GOD’S GOSPEL PLAN the WRATH of GOD IS UNLEASHED globally in various forms written in BIBLE. God uses earthquakes, volcanoes floods, tsunamis, wildfires, plagues, hot scorching sun, droughts, famines, Tribulation birthpang warning before the final GREAT TRIBULATIONS. OBEY God’s Sovereign WILL and accept Jesus in your life in Jesus Name.

JESUS LIVING STONE & Stones

1551649514313184234488.jpgJesus is the Living Stone rejected by the builders Who became the Cornerstone in Acts 4:11. So 1 Peter 2:5 says, you are the living stones built as a spiritual house and the holy priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 2:20 God Built on foundation of apostles and prophets as Christ Jesus Himself is Cornerstone. Ezekiel 36 : 26 says, I will give you a new heart and put new spirit in you. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. In Revelation 2:17, He who has ears let him hear what the Spirit says to Churches. And those who conquer I will give a hidden manna and white stone with new name written on no one knows except one who receives it. Corinthians 10:4, says they drank the same Spiritual drink from the Spiritual Rock Christ. To Church people afflicted in comfortless conditions, I will lay your foundation with precious stones says Isaiah 54:11. So 1 Peter 2:4 says Come to Jesus the Living Stone rejected by men but in Sight of God Chosen and Precious. In Matthew 21:42-44, Jesus said, “Have you not read in Scriptures, “The Stone builders rejected became a Cornerstone this is the LORD’S doing and marvelous in our eyes. In Luke 19:40 Jesus said, ‘I tell you if you are silent stones will cry out. I tell you the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to people producing fruits. Those who fall on this Stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone it will crush him.” Mark 12:10 says, “Have you not read this Scripture, the stone builders rejected has become the Cornerstone?” In Psalm 118:22, The stone the builders rejected has become Cornerstone. The Church, people afflicted in comfortless conditions, I will lay your foundation with precious stones says Isaiah 54:11. “O afflicted one storm-tossed and not comforted I will set your stones to lay foundation with sapphires. 1551649563813-1578423215.jpgRevelations 2:17 says, ‘He who has ears let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ In Luke 19:40 Jesus said, ‘If you are silent these stones will cry out. Matthew 3:9 says do not say ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from stones to raise up children for Abraham. Trust Jesus as 1 John 2:2 says, Jesus is the propitiation for sins and for sins of the whole world. 1 Corinthians 3:11 says no one can lay a foundation than that laid by the Lord Jesus Christ. In Mark 15:46, Matthew 27:60, Joseph bought a linen shroud to wrap Jesus laid him in a tomb cut out of rock and rolled a stone against entrance of the tomb. Heavy stone blocking Jesus’ tomb was rolled away by angels after Jesus arose from death. No stone is too heavy for God’s POWER and Authority against death. Believers in Christ know the gravestone will be removed to make way for Rapture in Jesus Name. Job 5:23 says you will be in league with stones of the field so beasts of the field shall be at peace with you. Daniel 2:34-45 says, The Stone cut from mountain by no human hands strikes image’s feet of iron and clay break them in pieces bronze, silver, and gold kingdoms. God made known the king’s dream interpretation to come. In Isaiah 8:14 Jesus is sanctuary and stone of offense, a rock of stumbling to houses of Israel, a trap and snare to inhabitants of Jerusalem. Jesus is the Stone Who will save His believer’s but crush the other kingdoms on earth. In Romans 9:33, it is written, I am laying in Zion the Stone as a stumbling block and a rock of offense, whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame.” In Matthew 16:18 Jesus tells Peter, you are the rock on which I will build My Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 1 Peter 2:8 says Jesus is the “Stone of stumbling and rock of offense so they stumble because they disobey the Word as destined to do. 1551649095180-549637598.jpgIsaiah 28:16, Thus says the LORD God, “I AM the ONE WHO laid foundation of Zion’s precious cornerstone foundation, ‘Whoever believes will not perish. Mark 13:1, said Jesus came out of the temple and told His disciple said, Look Teacher wonderful stones and building. The kings commanded in 1 Kings 5:17, quarried great, costly stones to lay the foundation of God’s House with dressed stones. 1 Kings 5:18 Solomon’s builders and Hiram’s builders and men of Gebal did the cutting and prepared the timber and stone to build the house. In 1 Kings 7:9, the costly stones, cut to measure, sawed with saw back and front for the foundations, top and from outside to great court. In 1 Chronicles 22:2, King David commanded resident strangers in the land of Israel to be stonecutters to prepare dressed stones for building the House of God. Solomon in 1 Kings 10:11 received fleet from Hiram, brought gold from Ophir and great amounts of almug wood and precious stones. Despite their grand designs with costly stones people deviated from true Worship of God. And Luke 21:5 says while speaking of temple how it was adorned with noble stones or offerings Jesus said will be destroyed. The temple was destroyed 40 years later and never rebuilt. Luke 19:44 says God tears to the ground, people and children within. So they did not leave stones in you because you did not know time of your visitation.” Luke 21:6 says, “These things you see the days will come when there will not be left no stone upon the other but thrown down. The rejection of Jesus means a spiritual fall like the fall of Temple. Like 2 Kings 19:18, Isaiah 37 :19 pleads they to cast their gods in fire for they were not gods but the works of men’s hands, wood, stone so destroyed. In Acts 19:17-19 residents of Ephesus, Jews and Greeks, fear fell upon them all, and Name of Lord Jesus extolled. Many believers confessed and divulged magic practices brought books burned them in the sight of all counted it’s value as fifty thousand pieces of silver.15516491431152847747.jpg

Stones are prominent in living history of the Bible. Elijah took twelve stones symbolic of the twelve tribes of Israel to build his altar in the Carmel contest. In Joshua 4:2-9, “Took twelve men from each tribe and command them, saying, ‘Take twelve stones from the midst of the Jordan, from the place the priests’ feet stood firmly, and bring them with you and lay them down in place where you lodge tonight… And Joshua said to them, “Pass before the ark of the LORD  God in the midst of Jordan, take a stone upon shoulder according to number of the tribes of the people of Israel, as sign among you. So your children in time to come ask, ‘What do those stones mean to you, Joshua 4:20-24 says those twelve stones, taken out of Jordan Joshua used to set up at Gilgal. He said to the people of Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’ Let your children know, Israel passed over Jordan on dry ground when the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over as the LORD your God did to the Red Sea HE dried up for us until we passed over. So all people on earth will know the Hand of the LORD God is mighty to you fear the LORD our God forever.”Genesis 28:18-22 says early in the morning Jacob took a stone he put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. He called the place Bethel but the name of city was Luz at first. Jacob made a vow, “If God will be with me and keep me in this way I go to give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, so I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the LORD will be my God, and this stone set up for pillar, God’s house. And all God gives me I will give a full tenth back to God.” Genesis 31:45-52 says Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar and said to his kinsmen, “Gather stones so they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there by the heap. Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob called it Galeed. Laban said, “This heap is witness between you and me today named Galeed and Mizpah, for he said, “The LORD watch between you and me out of one another’s sight. 1551649331615-549637598.jpgIn 1 Samuel 7:12, Samuel took a stone set up between Mizpah and Shen and called name Ebenezer for he said, “The LORD has always helped us.” And in 1 Samuel 17:40 David took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine Goliath struck down with a stone on his forehead. 1 Chronicles 20:8, these were descendants from the giants in Gath so they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants. Exodus 28:9-21 described two onyx stones engraved with names of the sons of Israel six of their names on one stone, and the remaining six on other stone, in order of their birth. As jeweler engraves signets, engrave the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel enclose them in settings of gold filigree. You shall set the two stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as stones of remembrance for the sons of Israel. Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD on shoulders for remembrance in prayers. And a New Jerusalem from heaven comes to earth with same twelve stones as engraved on priest’s breastplates in Exodus 35:27 the leaders brought onyx, stones for ephod and for gold rims of breastpiece. God’s foundation stones of city wall adorned by precious stones: jasper, sapphire, chalcedony, emerald, sardonyx, sardius, chrysolite, beryl, topaz, chrysoprase, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst” in Revelation 21:19–20. The breastplate as New Jerusalem of God considered beautiful and glorifying. Heaven’s brilliant splendour of streets paved with gold and divine jewels in foundations. God considers colours and materials important in glorifying HIM. Revelation 21:11 reveals GLORY of God’s radiance jewel like jasper clear crystal. 15516493980762847747.jpgRevelation 4:1-11 describes door of open in heaven and first voice like a trumpet said, “Come and I will show you what will take place after. I was in the Spirit and saw Throne in heaven with God seated on Throne. HE had appearance of jasper, carnelian, around throne was rainbow appearance with emerald. Around God’s  Throne, 24 elders, seated on twenty-four thrones clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads. Out of Throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder. Before God’s Throne burning seven torches of fire are seven spirits of God. In Exodus 34:1 the LORD told Moses, “Cut two tablets of stone like first so I will write 10 Commandments on tablets like the first tablets you broke in anger against people’s idolatry. The lesson in 1 John 4:1 is, don’t believe every spirit but test spirits to see if they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. The Hebrews people needed to know the difference between Yahweh and idols. Joshua 8:32, in the presence of people of Israel wrote on stones copy of laws of Moses. In Joshua 24:25 he made covenant with the people that day and gave them statutes, rules to them at Shechem. Zechariah 3:9 says, on the stone set before Joshua a stone with seven eyes, engrave inscription declares the LORD of hosts and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day. The servant of the LORD took Book of Law of Moses, made an altar of uncut stones without man’s wielded iron tool. They offered burnt offering to the LORD GOD and sacrificed peace offerings. Malachi 3:10 says, Bring all tithes to storehouse of God for food in my house. Put ME to test says the LORD of hosts to see I will open the windows of heaven to pour blessings until there is no more room for storage. 15516468499171381350304.jpgStones used for altars for God or sacred stool in Scotland or Stonehenge circles burial or shrines. Deuteronomy 21:18-21 says a stubborn rebellious child not obedient to voice of father or mother take them to city gate to be stoned to death by elders of his city at the gate of the place where he lives. They shall say to elders of his city, ‘our son is stubborn and rebellious did not obey our voice is a glutton and drunkard.’ All the men of the city stone him to death with stones to purge evil from your midst and Israel shall hear and fear. This law influenced cruelty to children and honour killings like Steven in Bible in Acts 8:1-40 Paul or Saul approved stoning. There arose a great persecution against the Church in Jerusalem scattered throughout regions of Judea and Samaria, except apostles. Devout men buried Stephen and made lamentation over him. Saul ravaging the church entered houses dragged men and women committed to prison. Those who scattered about preached the word. Philip went to city of Samaria proclaims Jesus to them. And Jesus saved woman caught in adultery from similar stoning told go and sin no more in John 8:1-59. Jesus is kind-hearted as people in Luke 11:11 give good gifts to children to eat fish not serpent or bread not stones, so is God pleased to give good gifts to all HIS Children. The greatest gift God gives is Eternal life-like Jesus saved mad man in Mark 5:5 who night and day in tombs on mountains cried out cut himself with stones. Yet recognised and worshipped Jesus the mad man cast away stones to receive Living Stone Jesus. Ecclesiastes 3:5 says there is time to cast away stone and time to gather stones. Matthew 4:1-6:34 said Jesus led by the Spirit into the wilderness tempted by the devil after 40 days and nights fasting was hungry, told ‘If you are the Son of God command the stones to become loaves of bread.’ Jesus answered, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the Mouth of God.’ In John 8:58-59, Then Jews came to Jesus and said you are not yet fifty years old but seen Abraham? Jesus said to them, I say to you, Before Abraham was, I Am. So they took stones to cast at him but He hid himself and went out of the temple, going through their midst and passed by. Jesus faced many challenges since His birth and throughout His Ministry but many people saved including Jews advised to continue in the Word and in the Way as Yeshua Messiah taught His believers. Thank God and Jesus for our salvation.

PLASTIC FREE PARTY CHOICE

Lindsay and Glen

Lindsay, 36, a writer from Kent, and her Australian husband Glen, 38, first tried living without plastic in 2012. It started out as a month-long challenge so turned into a way of life for the pair who live in Perth, Western Australia. “I’m more the driver than him but we got involved at the same time,” she says. “I’m the one that puts in more work but he agrees with all the values.” So going plastic free for their wedding, in 2014, was a no-brainer.Table decorationsPlastic finds way into weddings in many forms of food storage, drink packaging, decorations, flower delivery – that’s just the start. For Lindsay, who blogs about living without waste, trying to make her special day plastic free came first ahead of any other wishes. “We said we want to be plastic free ‘how can we do that,’ rather than saying, ‘We want roses, we want to have canapes, can we do plastic free memorable but not break the bank. Simplicity was key. To me simple means no fuss and devoting whole weekends to projects was out, says Lindsay.Food menuInvolving suppliers from outset was the most effective way of making a plastic-free event happen, she says. “It’s really about having conversations with people and explaining why you want to do it. People are willing.” But its about taking matters into you own hands. “If you get stuff delivered to you, that’s when it comes in packaging. It was making sure on the day we went to all the deli, the bakery et cetera so we could guarantee there was no packaging.” Eco Wedding Styles done includes recycled materials.Wedding decorations

  • Invitations: electronic, sent via email or Facebook
  • Flowers: freshly picked by family and friends from their gardens, arranged in old jam-jars
  • Decorations: borrowed lace bunting from old tablecloths and curtains • tins fished out of recycling bins and wrapped in twine and in hessian ribbon, which was also used for table runners • hired tablecloths and tea cups • bought beeswax candles in jars
  • Food: local businesses focused on locally sourced produce • hired pizza oven • cakes from a bakery that didn’t use plastic packaging • Indian snacks donated by a friend as a wedding gift
  • Drink: tap beer and cider • local wine • pre-made soft drinks served in jugs • loose tea and coffee • no straws
  • Tableware: venue’s own crockery and cutlery (although having pizza minimised amount needed) • borrowed glasses
  • Gifts: guests told not to buy presents – to avoid any waste and wrapping
  • Dress: rather than spend hours trawling charity shops, the bride bought a High-Street dress she wore again and then sold on eBay
  • Hair and make-up: used make-up bride had • washed hair with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar
  • Favours/confetti: did without it

Lindsay and Glen's weddingLindsay and Glen married local bowling club in Perth Lindsay accepts achieving a 100% plastic-free wedding also meant relying on other people. For wedding, they hired a pizza oven and used a local deli to provide fresh ingredients without plastic packaging but did they know what went on behind the scenes? “It’s possible some plastic that I didn’t see… whether he got a packet of salad in a plastic bag, I don’t know were counterbalanced by air miles required to fly her family albeit just four people to Australia. “In hindsight, I should have fallen in love with the guy in the village – but I didn’t,” Lindsay jokes. “I fell in love with a guy in Australia, so it’s one of those things you have to compromise. My parents, my sister and brother flying out for a wedding – it’s a one-off.” They did decide to have the wedding as local as possible in the city of Perth, rather than the countryside, to reduce driving distances. How difficult for Eugenie to achieve? Wedding planner Katrina Otter says working with the right people is key, as some of the more “old-school suppliers” are less keen to adapt. “Make sure you have the right team on board, work with a team willing to do it or one where it’s already part of their ethos.” She adds: Bride and groom might not know plastic involved cutlery wrapped in cling film. No royal wedding is complete without a vibrant floral display. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex leaving the chapelFlowers were a big part of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding day And, traditionally, a key part of those has been the floral foam – the bricks of green, spongy foam that provide a foundation for floral arrangements, as well as a water source. Katrina says finding an alternative to the non-biodegradable plastic material has become a big issue for the industry and many florists are looking to do it another way. The florist who created the displays for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding, Philippa Craddock, says she didn’t use any floral foam for their big day. The number of couples requesting plastic-free weddings is on the rise, says Katrina, although it remains a small proportion. Another issue to consider for any bride having live TV coverage is the hair and make-up. Kate Arnell, who blogged about her zero-waste wedding, in 2014, says she found it tricky to find plastic-free make-up and hair products. There are a lot more available and since swapped to plastic-free alternatives she says. Whether Princess Eugenie opts for Lindsay’s bicarbonate of soda, vinegar concoction on hair yet to be confirmed. Eugenie wedding wants plastic free on big day. In addition to venue, food and drink, music, the dress, hair and make-up, a bride’s checklist goes on. And also Princess Eugenie added another factor into equation her wedding to be plastic free. The Queen’s granddaughter, who is marrying Jack Brooksbank on 12 October, told British Vogue the couple’s house was anti-plastic and want our wedding to be like that as well.” So how realistic is it? Lindsay Miles discovered, there are quite a few things to take into consideration. If it is just one day, why bother? “A wedding is such a significant day that it’s even more important to be true to your values than on any other day,” says Lindsay. “You can’t go back on your values just because you’re getting married.”

HAPPIER IN BIGGER HOUSES?

isbUK is experiencing a dire shortage of living spaces and many homeless. While a few people live in the 20 to 50+ mansions so does having more rooms necessarily make people more happy and content? Its common to hear concerns about the pokey new-build sky-high rents that forces more people into smaller homes. The reality is living spaces in England and Wales for the rich wealthy famous is larger than ever. The average home increasing from 88 to 90 square metres between 2004 – 2020. The issue is that distribution of space is unequal to people. The owner occupiers have lots of space compared with young renters sharing home with many others. In 2019, about 28% of UK households contained one person, up from 17% in 1971. But the proportion of families and individuals sharing the private rented housing has almost tripled since 1992 to 6.6%, according toresearch by the Resolution Foundation think tank. So, does more space always mean happier occupants, or is there a cut-off point?Housing in numbers datapic

Status and neighbours

A London-based client told said an aunt came to visit her from Hong Kong. Upon seeing her shoe-box bedroom, she was filled not with pity, but with envy. The aunt grew up with seven people in one room thought this living arrangement is the height of luxury. This illustrates how level of space expected or aspired to can affect perspectives depending on what one is used to. After people move into a bigger house it may not take long before they start feeling like they don’t have enough room. Surveying almost 1,000 people who chose to upsize their home, my research found housing satisfaction initially increased after a move by 1.2 points on a seven-point scale. But within three years rise diminished by 30% as people’s space expectations increased.Chart showing housing satisfaction rises before a house move before diminishing

You might think that people with very big houses would be more satisfied with their property. Found increase beyond four rooms per person resulted in no uplift in housing satisfaction at all. This category is likely to include some older people who would like a smaller space but are reluctant to leave the family home. Even for the average household, more space may not necessarily lead to more happiness. Our space expectations are conditioned by where lived before, but by neighbours. Because house size is status symbol feels worse off if other people get larger houses. A recent US study found increase in size of largest 10% of superstar houses had significant negative effect on their neighbours, Woman prepares food with her daughterThose people who moved into a bigger home, previous surveys have suggested people would be prepared to have less living space overall if it meant less than others. Rising cost of ‘normal’ is not to say everyone is consciously competing with their neighbours over who has the biggest house. Most concern of a house size may stem from underlying desire to fit in to do things considered “normal.”  This could be having dinner around the family table or watching TV on the sofa which requires what is considered to be a “normal” level of living space. If home sizes increase then so does the amount of space we feel like we need just to keep up. If all have space for home gym having friends round for a workout could well become as normal as having them round for dinner.Couple looking at big houseCounting the costs as a nation, do not seem to be getting any happier with our housing, even though living space and housing conditions have improved for many people. The US-based study draws similar conclusions. It suggests people living in a detached house, satisfaction stayed the same since the 1980s as the amount of space per person has grown by about 40%, to more than 900 square feet. People moving into bigger homes comes with costs. Spending more on housing means people incurring more mortgage debt, working longer hours, or commuting longer distance, building more homes has significant irreversible environmental costs. An overwhelming case is to provide genuinely affordable housing for those suffering in cramped, unaffordable living conditions. Beyond this increase is if average living spaces improve wellbeing society is debated.
