TITHES & OFFERING IN BIBLE

tithes-and-offering-scriptures

The LORD spoke to Moses saying,  Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring Me an offering or terumah in Hebrew. So everyone who gives willingly with his heart you shall take My offering says Exodus 25:1–2. God gave Israelites 53 mitzvot laws out of 613 commandments. These laws included the treatment of parents, slaves and foreigners, tithing, offerings, other people’s property. Gifts or Terumah תְּרוּמָה in Hebrew means an offering or contribution. The LORD God commanded Moses to take up a free will offering from people of Israel to build sanctuary in wilderness. In order to fund the building of the Sanctuary, God commands Moses to take a census of the people of Israel and to instruct them to give a half shekel of silver. “This is what everyone who is numbered shall give, half a shekel as a contribution to the LORD in Exodus 30:13.

A half-shekel coin from the First Jewish War (AD 66–70).  Around the chalice it says, “Half Shekel,” and above it “Year 2.”  The sprig of pomegranate side states “Jerusalem is holy.” In Exodus 35:35  and  36:5 says skilled women spun with their hands and brought what they spun in blue, purple, scarlet materials in fine linen. All  women   whose heart stirred with skill spun  goats’ hair.  The rulers brought onyx stones and stones for setting for ephod and breastplate. Moses asked all those skilled to work as engravers, designers and embroiderers in blue, purple, scarlet yarn, fine linen weavers skilled workers and designers. Embroiderers threaded fine linen cloth so weavers were excelled craftsmen and designers. The people responded well by giving like crowd funding today so much more than asked for. They brought too much more than needed everyday to Moses for the temple work. Moses told people to stop giving because they received more than required to complete temple tabernacle sanctuary for LORD God.
The Mishkan Shilo Synagogue in the community of Shilo is a replica of the Biblical Tabernacle. This sanctuary, called the Mishkan, was meant to be a visible reminder for the people of God’s Holy Presence that dwelt among them. The offerings people bring include precious metals and stones, fine linens, animal skins, wood, oil for lamps, fragrant spices for the incense for God’s House. God instructed Moses to take offering only from those who give willingly from their heart. Again in 1 Chronicles 29 Gifts for Building the Temple from King David told the whole assembly: “My son Solomon God chose is young and inexperienced and the task is great, because palatial structure is not for man but for the Lord God. All my resources provided for the temple of my God gold for gold work, silver for silver, bronze for bronze, iron for iron, wood for wood, onyx for settings, turquoise, stone of various colours, all kinds of fine stone and marble all in large quantities. In my devotion to the temple of my God I give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God over and above everything I have provided for this holy temple: three thousand talents of gold of Ophir and seven thousand talents of refined silver for overlaying of walls of the buildings, for the gold work and the silver work, and all work to be done by the craftsmen. All willing to consecrate themselves to the Lord today join in and  leaders of families, officers of the tribes of Israel, commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and officials in charge of the king’s work gave willingly.  They gave toward the work on temple of God five thousand talents, ten thousand darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents bronze, a hundred thousand talents iron. All who had precious stones gave to treasury of the temple of the Lord in the custody of Jehiel the Gershonite. The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders giving freely wholeheartedly to the Lord so David rejoiced greatly.

Give 10% Tithe first plus offering of what you decide in your own heart to God not reluctantly or under compulsion for God loves a cheerful giver says 2 Corinthians 9:7 in the Bible. Due to a sinful nature some tend to be selfish not to give and complain about leaders lifestyle or seek what they receive only. Bible tells us it is more blessed to give than to receive in Acts 20:35. We give to God toward the work of the Lord, so we receive back so much more than just what we have given. “Give, and it will be given to you,   good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you says Luke 6:38. And Malachi 3:10 emphasizes the principle of giving to the Lord God that HE will pour out blessings when you give to HIM.The LORD God says ‘When you each pay the Lord a ransom for his life at the time he is counted, no plague will come on them when Moses numbers them in  Exodus 30:11–12. In Deuteronomy 28 and Malach 3:10, those who sponsor the Kingdom of God are delivered from Gods curses in Haggai falling on those who chose to neglect the House of God but lavish grand mansions shown off proudly to others. There is God’s protective providence in giving.tithes

UNTIL YOU TITHE YOU CAN’T TESTIFY

TERUMAH (Offering)
Exodus 25:1–27:19; 1 Kings 5:26–6:13; Hebrews 9:128
TITHING TIME TO GOD
Tithe includes personal time devoted to Thank, Praise, Glorify, Honour God. For six days work is to be done but seventh day shall be your Holy Day Sabbath rest to the Lord.  Whoever does any work on it is to be put to death.  Do not light a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day in Exodus 35:2–3. Jesus said if there is any emergency to save lives Sabbath is to an occassion to help as Jesus asked who will not save their sheep fallen into a well. Jesus healed the disabled man on the Sabbath. Sabbath health contributes to good health and rest too fir wellbeing. told to
The people stood prepared to begin the construction of the Tabernacle. Moses told people not to work on Sabbath so the holiness of Sabbath is not violated for sacred purpose of building God’s Tabernacle. In addition, the size of the offering depends on the proportion of income and wealth. The widow’s mite   amount offering sacrificial love counts to the Lord Jesus. In Luke 21, Yeshua (Jesus) observed the rich giving gifts into the Temple treasury.  He witnessed a poor widow put in two leptons called mites in the King James translation of the Bible. In Yeshua’s day a lepton Greek for small orthin was the smallest denomination of coins.  Like pennies today, they would hardly be considered worth the effort of stooping to pick one up off the street.
A bronze lepton is estimated to have been worth about six minutes of a day’s wage.  The term lepton has survived in Greece so is 1/100 denomination of the official currency. Her two mites was all she had so appreciated by Yeshua who noticed tiny offering widow gave as great honour. Considered significant offering recorded two thousand years ago. And  Yeshua actually valued widow’s offering more generous than offerings of the rich. “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them.  For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has. So most important point to note is build God’s House to please God in Christ and feed his sheep, help least in society too.
