After years of toiling in bondage torment of slavery in Egypt, whole nation of millions in refugee camp find themselves not doing much any longer. Without adequate clean running water, sumptuous meals, sophisticated medical facilities and resources used to in luxury in Egypt. No regular gardening, farming, fishing, building pyramids, constructing super big structural works, felt bored. The harsh desert environment impacted them to have contempt for Moses and Aaron. The devil finds work for the idle hands frustrated, unaccomplished ones. Some begun to look for things to do to try to preoccupy themselves. With not much luxury resources in wilderness became ungrateful and unthankful to God. Begun mocking, murmuring, ridiculing, taunting, complaining, moaning, sabotaging, recruiting, inciting others to join to confront, harass, blame Moses and Aaron for all their life problems in wilderness. They started trying to damage leadership reputation of Moses and Aaron. Instead of submission, encouraging, corporating, supporting, leading by good example to discuss perceived grievance. Rather than humbly approaching in a civilised manner, to unite together to solve problems, to recreate new self – sufficient community in wilderness they attacked Moses and Aaron. Despite positions of authority and privilege were not loyal or God Fearing. So seethed with bottled rage they vented anger by ganging up with others to challenge leadership of Moses and Aaron. They went looking for opportunities to query to destroy God’s Chosen Appointed leaders Moses and Aaron. They focussed anger towards Moses thereby enraging God Who Chose Moses and Aaron to lead them. In Numbers 16:1-35, Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi plus Dathan, Abiram sons of Eliab and son of Peleth the Reubenites, took men and rebelled against Moses, with 250 leaders of community chosen from assembly as famous men. They assembled against Moses and Aaron saying, “You take too much upon yourselves seeing whole community is holy, every one of them and God is also among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the community of the Lord?” 16:4 When Moses heard it he fell down with his face to the ground. 16:5 Then he said to Korah and to all his company, “In the morning the Lord will make known who are His and who is holy.
God will cause that person to approach him; the person He has chosen He will cause to approach Him. 16:6 Do this, Korah, you and all your company, take censers, 16:7 put fire in them. And set incense on them before the Lord tomorrow and the man whom the Lord chooses will be holy. You take too much upon yourselves, you sons of Levi!” 16:8 Moses said to Korah, “Listen now, you sons of Levi! 16:9 Does it seem too small a thing to you God of Israel separated you from the community of Israel to bring you near to himself, to perform service of the tabernacle of the Lord, to stand before the community to minister to them? 16:10 God brought you near and all your brothers, the sons of Levi, with you. Do you now seek the priesthood also? 16:11 You and all your company assembled together against the Lord! And what has Aaron done that you murmur against him?” 16:12 Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, but said, “We will not come up. 16:13 Is it a small thing you brought us out of land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in wilderness? Now do you want to make yourself a prince over us? 16:14 Moreover, you have not brought us into a land that flows with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you think you can blind these men? We will not come up.” 16:15 Moses was very angry, and he said to the Lord, “Have no respect for their offering! I have not taken so much as one donkey from them, nor have I harmed any one of them!”16:16 Then Moses said to Korah, “You and all your company present yourselves before the Lord and leaders tomorrow. 16:17 Each of you take his censer, put incense in it and present his censer before the Lord. 250 censers along with you and Aaron, each of you with his censer.” 16:18 So everyone took his censer, put fire in it and set incense on it. And stood at entrance of tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron. 16:19 When Korah assembled the whole community against them at entrance of the tent of meeting, the Glory of the Lord appeared to the whole community. In Numbers 16:20-35, in 16:20 God spoke to Moses and Aaron 16:21 “Separate yourselves from among this community, that I may consume them in an instant.”
16:22 Then they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground and said, “O God, the God of the spirits of all people, will you be angry with the whole community when only one man sins?”16:23 So the Lord spoke to Moses: 16:24 “Tell the community: ‘Get away from around the homes of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.’” 16:25 Then Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel went after him. 16:26 And he said to the community, “Move away from the tents of these wicked men, and do not touch anything they have, lest you be destroyed because of all their sins.” 16:27 So they got away from the homes of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram on every side, and Dathan and Abiram came out and stationed themselves in the entrances of their tents with their wives, children, and toddlers. 16:28 Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the Lord has sent me to do all these works, for I have not done them of my own will. 16:29 If these men die a natural death, or if they share the fate of all men, then the Lord has not sent me. 16:30 But if the Lord does something entirely new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up along with all that they have, and they go down alive to the grave, then you will know that these men have despised the Lord!”16:31 When he had finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split open, 16:32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, along with their households, and all Korah’s men, and all their goods. 16:33 They and all that they had went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed over them. So they perished from among the community. 16:34 All the Israelites who were around them fled at their cry, for they said, “What if the earth swallows us too?” 16:35 Then a fire went out from the Lord and devoured the 250 men who offered incense.God has His Way of dealing with people rebelling against chosen leaders. God’s chosen leader may not be perfect or preferred according to man’s decision. God ordains leaders so they are directly accountable and responsible to God. However, reluctant tyrants do not account to God or respect people because they lord themselves as gods over people. This enrages and infuriates some members of the community to try to take the law into their own hands. God does not yield to such anger and destructive rage of anarchist’s personality nature in the name of God. God responds decisively by opening the earth to bury rebellious ones and their families alive.
God is capable of dishing out His Own Judgement Punishment on behalf of His People in His Own Way and Timing. It is important to Fear God to give leaders due honour. Egyptian bondage and the exodus desert wilderness is still in existence, alive and well in Christendom today. Moses and Aaron did not entertain those self – righteous leaders and members who want to determine the direction of the church. Many leaders like Moses and Aaron appointed, called and chosen by God Jehovah still face challenges. From in fighting flimsy issues matters of colour of carpet, decor, softness of comfortable pews, sitting positions in front of church to be seen on TV. Compared to financial responsibility of running mega televised church costing millions of dollars per week. In addition, leader is expected to please high maintenance sophisticated funders. As heavy duty multitude back bone contributors want to run leader’s life and church agenda.
A leader who dares to correct inappropriate behaviour is abandoned by such regular sponsors and supporters. Inadvertently responsible for creating pyramid scheme church lifestyle such leaders became accustomed to. Soon develop taste for the good things of life, wanting more to keep up with the Joneses’ sophisticated lifestyle. Soon God is out of Centre of worship with sermons becoming insinuations at long suffering loyal members of the congregation. Church life becomes chaotic as leaders are self-serving. Yet God is the Ultimate Owner of people with Christ as the Head of the Christian Church. Its means leaders and the congregation are both directly accountable to God. Therefore, the church is about first pleasing and worshipping God before tackling personal grievances in counselling. God asked Pharaoh to let go to go to worship and serve God. This the whole purpose of God creation people on earth. To acknowledge His Creation of priceless people and the firmaments. God wants exclusive attention on Himself First and Foremost. Then due honour is given to the honourable leaders. Leaders first God’s Stewards before trying to please people. So Moses refused to condone rebellious tyrants.
Some leaders demand consultation fees to counsel members who pay upfront. In turn, members are banned from associating with Christian affiliations to retain control over their lives. Having given all life savings have nowhere else to turn. Meanwhile, watch such leaders getting richer while members get poorer. Resentment sets in and the atmosphere is tense but they are coupled for life. Some are paired to marry so the become the pawn of those leaders. God’s Word is used to influence and cajole them into submission. God is not at the helm of affairs or at centre in the heart of those churches. Having form of godliness but denying God’s Powerful Presence through the Holy Spirit. Routine ritual gimmick motion, grumbling faction bickering gossip rules such churches. Sweeping brewing issues under carpet becomes full blown scandal beyond concealment. The truth of the matter is both become victim of success as tolerant enabler condones. By avoiding correction due to fear of man leader is built up above God so ‘worshipped’ in place of God Almighty. Yet do not recognise pattern of behaviour taking God’s adulation and honour for themselves. God Comes First as each person’s life is empowered by Holy Spirit and God’s Word to meet together to celebrate God in Jesus Name.
